Would Microsoft sell telemetry from Windows 10 to third parties?

Windows 10 had already attracted the wrath of some of its customers because of the amount of information sent to Microsoft's servers. An agreement with FireEye suggests that Microsoft may resell this information to third parties.

The case begins on November 3, with a fairly innocuous press release from FireEye. The IT security company is pleased to have signed an agreement with Microsoft, whereby FireEye iSIGHT technology will be added to Windows Defender. But two weeks later, an article by our Australian colleagues ARN ignited the powders because of a small sentence: "Security teams will also have access to telemetry using a subscription-based billing model. "

Storm in a glass of water?
So would Microsoft resell the data of its users to FireEye or its customers? The answer must be qualified. By integrating iSIGHT with Windows Defender, Microsoft allows FireEye clients to retrieve the data contained in Windows Defender reports. However, these data are not personal documents.

In the absence of a clear answer from Microsoft or FireEye, the doubt remains. However, there are several important points. On one hand, the problem only affects corporate PCs, using Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection, not the consumer versions. These are therefore posts provided to an employee whose data are in any case subject to the review of the company. Finally, the telemetry data collected by Microsoft and likely to be shared are anonymised.
