Google will bid farewell to Map Maker

In 2008, Google launched Map Maker, a tool that allowed for improvements to Google Maps based on user suggestions. But on Tuesday, the US giant has announced plans to stop this tool.

With Map Maker Tool, users were able to share a place and give a more specific description about it. This allowed Google to get feedback on its service to enrich and improve. Google announced the closure will take effect in March 2017.

If Map Maker has provided much information to Google Maps and has enriched its service, the tool had also known his blunders. Last year, a User Map Maker had drawn a robot Android urinating on an Apple logo. This incident was enough to make the tool temporarily unavailable and encourage Google to review its moderators.

Instead of Map Maker, Google will launch a program called Local Guides program of rewarding users that help improve Google Maps. They will continue to add places and information, and will receive bonus points.
